In an experimental study accepted for publication in the Journal of Periodontology, researchers have succeeded in showing that defects filled with Tigran’s Porous Titanium Granules (PTG) give significantly more new bone formation than a market leading product made of deproteinized bovine bone mineral. The study was done in surgically created class II periodontal furcations in minipigs, comparing PTG, deproteinized bovine bone mineral and sham (no filling). Histological as well as micro-CT analyses showed significantly more vertical bone formation and significantly more bucco-palatal bone formation with PTG as well as significantly more mean defect fill compared to deproteinized bovine bone mineral and sham.
Dr C. Wohlfahrt of the Institute of Clinical Odontology at the University of Oslo, Norway who was heading up the study “Micro-CT and histological analysis of animal experimental degree II furcation defects treated with porous titanium granules or deproteinized bovine bone” concludes that “The results in this study of mini pigs suggests that PTG may integrate well in alveolar bone and supports osseous regrowth in degree II furcation defects”.
”Periodontitis is one of the world’s most common diseases. A class II furcation defect means that the supporting bone between the roots of the molars has resorbed and if not treated there is a risk that the bone resorbtion will continue and that the tooth will become loose and fall out. The encouraging results of Dr Wohlfahrt’s study will form a further basis for Tigran’s substantial clinical development program”, says Björn Sellert, CEO Tigran Technologies AB.
Tigran Technologies is the company behind the small titanium granules that act as a scaffold for the body’s bone cells when the jawbone needs reinforcement or regeneration. The company sees a large potential for the product that can be used for rebuilding jawbone within several dental applications.
“Treating patients afflicted by bone loss with titanium instead of other products available on the market such as bone regeneratives based on bovine materials has several advantages. Firstly, because titanium is fully non-resorbable, it allows for predictable and long-term results. Secondly, titanium is preferable from an ethical point of view because avoidance of using animal-based products. Furthermore, titanium is a thoroughly tried-out and well-documented material used in the human body for over 40 years”, says Björn Sellert.

Tigran Technologies AB (publ) is a dental sales- and development company based in Sweden. Tigran offers a system for bone regeneration and implant fixation in the mouth. The technology is based on porous titanium grains acting as climbing frame for the body’s bone cells in the process to rebuild jawbone in order to place and stabilize implants and prevent further bone loss. Tigran also develops instruments for an optimized treatment and increased patient comfort in dental bone regeneration procedures. Tigran runs an extensive development program and has a number of published, submitted and on-going experimental and clinical studies. The company’s products, methods and technologies are covered by a strong intellectual property portfolio. The products are CE-marked. Tigran’s products are sold through selected distributors and through own sales force. “Tigran” is a registered trademark of Tigran Technologies AB.
