Press release March 15, 2011

In a case study recently published in JOMI (The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants), researchers have succeeded in rebuilding jawbone resorbed due to peri-implantitis (inflammation with concurrent bone loss around dental implants) with titanium. The unique evidence is first in its kind to prove implant stabilization in patients afflicted with peri-implantitis.
”Ten years after implant treatment, about 15-20 % of the patients have infections around one or several implants. If not treated, the inflammation may lead to loss of the infected implant. Dr Wohlfahrt’s results are very positive and indicate a possibility to treat such infections”, says Stefan Renvert, Professor of Oral Health Sciences at Kristianstad University.

”Dr Wohlfahrt’s case study is unique and proves for the first time that jawbone resorbed around a titanium implant as a consequence of inflammation (peri-implantitis) can be rebuilt with titanium”, says Björn Sellert, CEO Tigran Technologies AB.

Tigran Technologies is the company behind the small titanium granules that act as a scaffold for the body’s bone cells when the jawbone needs reinforcement or regeneration. The company sees a large potential for the product that can be used for rebuilding jawbone within several dental applications.

“Treating patients afflicted by bone loss with titanium instead of other products available on the market such as bone regeneratives based on bovine materials has several advantages. Firstly, because titanium is fully non-resorbable, it allows for predictable and long-term results. Secondly, titanium is preferable from an ethical point of view because avoidance of using animal-based products. Furthermore, titanium is a thoroughly tried-out and well-documented material used in the human body for over 40 years”, says Björn Sellert.

A main study within peri-implantitis on 32 patients has been submitted for publication and is expected to be published during this year. Within the sinus lift area (bone regeneration in the upper jaw to install dental implants), very positive five year data of a study was recently presented. Furthermore, additional international multicenter studies are ongoing to further prove titanium’s capacity in various dental bone regeneration applications.
