Press release May 3, 2011
An experimental study evaluating the bone preservation effect of bone regenerative materials in tooth extraction sockets, has been accepted for publication in Clinical Oral Implants Research (COIR). The study shows favorable results for using porous titanium granules for jawbone preservation after tooth extraction.
Following tooth removal as a consequence of dental diseases or trauma, the buccal bone wall in particular is reduced in thickness as well as in height within a short time. These changes have obvious implications for any subsequent implant placement, particularly in the aesthetic front zone. To preserve bone height in these situations, a bone regenerative material such as Tigran™ PTG (porous titanium granules) may be used.
The study “The effect of permanent grafting materials on the preservation of the buccal bone plate after tooth extraction. An experimental study in the dog.” compares the titanium method of Tigran Technologies (Malmö, Sweden) with a xenograft material derived from bovine bone. Although differences
between modalities were not statistically significant, the study found the titanium granules to provide an effective scaffold for bone regeneration. From histological observation in the study, the potential for osteoconduction was evident from the presence of osseointegration and bone fill within the granules.
The titanium method for regenerating jawbone has previously been scientifically investigated, most recently in a case published in March in JOMI (The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants), in which researchers succeeded in rebuilding jawbone resorbed due to peri-implantitis
(inflammation with subsequent bone loss around dental implants) with titanium. This unique evidence was first in its kind to prove implant stabilization in patients afflicted with peri-implantitis, which is seen in 15-25 % of patients 10 years after implant placement.
“Treating patients afflicted by bone loss with titanium instead of other products available on the market such as bone regeneratives based on bovine materials has several advantages. Firstly, because titanium is fully non-resorbable, it allows for predictable and long-term results. Secondly, titanium is preferable from an ethical point of view because avoidance of using animal-based products. Furthermore, titanium is a thoroughly tried-out and well-documented material used in the human body for over 40 years”, says Björn Sellert, CEO Tigran Technologies AB.

About Tigran Technologies AB
Tigran Technologies AB (publ) is a dental sales- and development company based in Sweden. Tigran offers a system for bone regeneration and implant fixation in the mouth. The technology is based on porous titanium grains acting as climbing frame for the body’s bone cells in the process to rebuild
jawbone in order to place and stabilize implants and prevent further bone loss. Tigran also develops instruments for an optimized treatment and increased patient comfort in dental bone regeneration procedures.
Tigran runs an extensive development program and has a number of published, submitted and on-going experimental and clinical studies. The company’s products, methods and technologies are covered by a strong intellectual property portfolio. The products are CE-marked. Tigran’s products are sold through selected distributors and through own sales force. “Tigran” is a registered trademark of Tigran Technologies AB.
